Tarawera in form for Steeples

Special correspondent Palmerston North Tarawera and Golden Sealord head a small Woodville team for tomorrow’s Wellington meeting and both worked soundly yesterday morning in their final trials. Fast work was done well out on the course proper, with the going soft. Tarawera worked over a round, running the last 1200 m in 1:24, and final 600 m in 41.25. He suffered no ill effects from his Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase win in heavy ground — in fact he came through it better than ever. Paul Goss will ride him again in the

Wellington Steeplechase and the combination should be hard to beat.

Golden Sealord and Flight to Reno were not after time when they ran from the 1200 m at three-quarter pace. They sped up over the last 600 m in 395. Golden Sealord has 57kg in the Te Aro Handicap but there is not much apparent talent among the opposition and with David Walsh up he must be a firm favourite.

Trentham’s winter ground may be his biggest hurdle, but he has handled everything he has tackled so far. Greystoke ran a round in the early light and was not timed. He makes his debut in the maiden Steeplechase.

Court Appeal and Amersham went 600 m in 39.55, the same being recorded by Look at Me. Burnemoff finished ahead of Our Brut over 1200 m in 1:24, the last 600 m in 42.75. Lunar Trail and a Danseur Etoile gelding worked over 600 m in 40s. Ann Deming and an In the Purple filly ran the distance in 41.45. Fred’s Fortune required 41.35.

Belmore and Power Bill galloped 800 m in 545, the last 600 m in 40.15. Leading Glance and Reverse Charge took 39.6 s for 600 m.

Our Ransom and Mysgim went well to run 600 m in 395. Thalia ran the same distance in 41.45.
