Rise in vacancies for jobs — survey

PA Wellington A total of 12,876 vacancies were recorded in the half-yearly job vacancy survey by the Labour Department on February 28. This was an increase of 3774 over the figure of 9102 recorded in the survey of August 1984, and an increase of 5153 vacancies from that of 7724 in February 1984, according to Labour Department statistics. The survey covered over 80,000 establishments employing an estimated 80 per cent of the total New Zealand workforce. The distribution of the vacancies in the different sectors at February 28,1985, compared with the same date in 1984, was: Private sector: Full-time, 9354 (up 3592); part-time, 1372 (up 692). Government sector: Fulltime, 561 (up 305); part-time, 36 (down 26). Government corporation: full-time, 201 (up 90); parttime, 7 (up 6). Local authority: full-time. 1257 (up 487); part-time, 88 (up 6). All sectors: full-time, 11,373 (up 4474); part-time, 1503 (up 678). Full-time vacancies recorded for the main industry groups compared with the same period last year were: Forestry and logging, 37 (up 22); mining and quarrying, 36 (up 26); manufacturing, 3851 (up 1382); electricity, gas and water, 165 (up 74); construction, 1378 (up 508); trade, restaurants and hotels, 1796 (up 752); transport and communication, 360 (up 209); finance, insur-

ance and real estate, 1096 (up 494); community and personal services, 2654 (up 1007). Of the 11,373 full-time vacancies recorded in February 1985, 3636 or 32 per cent were open to young people under 20 years, of age. This was an increase of 1557 vacancies available to juniors from February 1985. The number of longerduration vacancies, that is full-time positions unfilled for more than six weeks, at

February 28, 1985, was 4549 or 2789 more than for the previous February. Districts, in which significant changes in the number of vacancies were recorded between February 1984 and February 1985, were: Auckland (up 1595), Takapuna (up 278), Manukau (up 708), Rotorua (up 192), Wellington (up 504), New Plymouth (up 170), Christchurch (up 441), Palmerston North (up 164), and Hamilton (up 321).
