P.O. probe welcomed

PA Wellington The Consumers’ Institute was welcome to investigate the basis of Post Office charges any time it wished, said the Postmaster-Gen-eral, Mr Hunt, yesterday. The institute has said it will make a study of the new charges announced on Monday to see if they are justified. Mr Hunt said the increases were the first for

more than three years. During that time costs had risen about 29 per cent, which answered the concern of the institute’s director, Mr Dick Smithies, who had said that having gone through a catch-up period, there should now be stability in Post Office charges. It was not realistic to expect charges to be held at their 1982 level for ever, said Mr Hunt.
