Increased Lyttelton cargo tonnage

Cargo moved through the Port of Lyttelton during May totalled 286,678 tonnes, an increase of more than 35,000 tonnes over the corresponding period last year. The Lyttelton Harbour Board’s marketing manager, Mr Peter Morgan, told the board’s trade ana development committee this week that total cargo tonnage for the eight months to May 31 was 2,016,023 tonnes. This was an increase of 17 per cent over the same period last year. Exports now account for 51 per cent of the Board’s overseas trade, having increased 205,000 tonnes over the corresponding period last year. Coastal cargo has shown an increase for both imports (39,974 tonnes) and exports (18,550 tonnes). The large amount of petroleum products coming through Lyttelton was mainly responsible for the increase in coastal imports, said Mr Morgan. ARRIVALS Coastal Trader (7 a.m.), 6736, Dunedin (S.C.N.Z.).
