‘Out to Lunch’ concert
“Out to Lunch” with Rebecca Steel (flute) and Maurice Till (piano), presented by the Arts Employment Scheme at the Great Hall, Arts Centre, July 1, 1 p.m. Reviewed by Philip Norman. Even the best laid schemes of mice and men cannot hope to accommodate the vagaries of winter ills. With less than 24 hours notice, a cold in the throat effectively put paid to Christopher Doig’s appearance as tenor soloist in the first of this year’s series of “Out to Lunch” concerts. A replacement soloist, fortunately, was close at hand: Rebecca Steel, accompanied by Maurice Till, gave a commendably secure recital of flute and piano music. The fact that the programme was prepared and intelligently delivered at such short notice is a testament to the quick instincts and enviable reading skills of both flautist and pianist. Handel’s Sonata in E minor was given particularly stylish treatment. The dotted rhythms of the opening grave had good poise and the rapid, lengthy runs of the ensuing allegro were given a pleasingly even articulation.
The adagio was graciously phrased, and a briskly-paced allegro brought the work to a spirited and satisfying close.
The four movements that comprise the introspective
“Suite Modale” by Bloch were given tender, caring consideration. The pastoral quality of the music was well-captured with a haunting, mellow flute sound. By dint of well-considered shaping, momentum was sustained throughout the meandering solo lines.
Full marks to Maurice Till for keeping the lush piano accompaniment to Reinecke’s “Undine Sonata” tucked discreetly under the
flute sound. This work was performed with hearty spirit (particularly the frisky main theme of the intermezzo) and provided a wholesome close to the recital. At times, though, especially in the closing movement, the mood of the performance teetered on the brink of sentimentality.
Today’s “Out to Lunch” concert will feature the' Christchurch Percussion Ensemble.
