Hunt steeples should provide exciting contest

Special correspondent Wellington Two jumpers, which figured in the sensational finish •to the Wanganui Steeples last month could play a leading part in the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Club’s Hunt Steeples at Wanganui today. They are Kanamint and Win I Must. Kanamint was the first to the line in the. Wanganui Chase, beating Sonic Symbol by a long neck. The result was reversed after an inquiry.

Win I Must, from the Robinson stable in Matangi, failed to complete the Wanganui Steeples when he took the wrong course. He was clear and going like a winner when he made to go around the inside of the course instead, of going out on to the course proper for the final 200 or 20 metres and fell through the nylon marker. Win I Must has not started since the illfated race, but Kanamint won the Waipa Steeples by six lengths just over a fortnight ago.

The two will be joined in an intriguing Hunt Cup by Crown Star, a member of the Browne stable. Crown Star won the Grand National Hurdles at the beginning of the season and is a rising steeplechase star. He missed the Hawke’s Bay Chase over a week ago because of bad ground, but went on to Rotorua to win last Friday.

That was over 4200 m, which is 200 m less than today’s test. Before Crown Star had run third at Hawera he won a maiden chase at Northland. He remains an exciting prospect.

As well as Win I Must, the Robinsons have Alldat Jazz in the race and the Hunt Cup has been a good race to them in recent seasons, with Van der Hum winning the prize a year ago.

Stephen Jenkins will take the mount on Peka Prince, which has missed a run at Hastings for this one, while Farfalla is the lone Wellington Steeples entrant in the race.

He won the Manawatu Chase and was just a length and a half from Royal Mint in the Hastings Steeples last week. He will be a big chance if he runs. The War Hawk II mare, Always Summer, has a good record on the track and looks the one to beat in the Simmons Handicap, first leg of the T.A.B. double. She was sixth at Awapuni last time, but won at Wanganui at the Queen’s Birthday fixture. David Walsh will ride her. Always Summer has an engagement for the Whyte Handicap at Trentham on Saturday. Jade Maria, which has an engagement in the Stewards’ Handicap at Trentham, may be the hardest to beat. Apart from her effort at Hawera, she has been most consistent.

The Hastings winner, High Profile, Eastern Ruler, and Vicki Deming, may be the best of the others. Yale looks to be the leading light in the Waverley Handicap, the second leg.
