when he lost the 1980 election to Mr Mugabe, addressed a big rally in his south-western powerbase of Bulawayo on Saturday, his expected last public appearance before the polls open. He told more than 100,000 people that postal voting by members of the Armed Forces, police, and prisons on duty away from their home areas had been rigged by the Government. Nevertheless, Mr Nkomo predicted victory for PFZ.A.P.U. because, he said, people were tired of Mr Mugabe’s governing. His party won 20 seats in 1980 to 57 for Z.A.N.U.-P.F. and three for the United African National Council of the Methodist bishop, Abel Muzorewa.
