Immediate ban sought

PA Wellington A ban on new dairy farmers should be applied immediately, says the chairman of Federated Farmers’ dairy section, Mr Bruce Tolich. Dairy company representatives voted at the national dairy conference on Friday to cut milk production by banning the entry of new suppliers for a year from October 1. The industry will then decide whether to extend the moratorium. The drastic move is

aimed at preventing farmers from other sectors leaping the fence to enjoy comparatively high dairy returns and add to the industry’s oversupply problems. Mr Tolich said yesterday that the companies should have imposed the ban from tomorrow if they were serious about curtailing production. Delaying the ban until October simply meant prospective dairy farmers would rush to sign up with companies over the next few months, he said.
