World wheat crop estimate rises

NZPA-AFP London The International Wheat Council has raised its estimate of the world wheat crop for 1985 by two million tonnes to a record 524 million tonnes, four million more than in 1984, says its latest market report. The higher forecast results from increased crop estimates for China, from 87 to a record 89M tonnes, against 87.7 M last year, Eastern Europe, from 33 to 33.5 M tonnes, against 34.8 M, South America, from 15.5 to 16M tonnes, against 16.9 M, and Africa, from nine to 9.5 M tonnes, against 9.2 M. The estimate for Soviet outfit remains unchanged

at 88M tonnes, up from 75M last year. The world wheat area is set to increase by some two million hectares in 1985 to 234 M hectares, although it will remain below the 1981 record of 240 M because of the steady decline in plantings in the Soviet Union and the effect of successive area-reduction programmes in the United States. This year, however, the Soviet area is likely to remain unchanged from 1984, while plantings in Western and Eastern Europe, the United States, and East Asia are lower. Those in Canada, South America, the Middle East, Africa, and Australia are expend to increase. tft
