Islands reject fishing request
NZPA-Reuter Honiara The Solomon Islands has rebuffed a move by the Soviet Union to establish fishing rights in its Exclusive Economic Zone, said the Acting Prime Minister, Ezekiel Alebua. Moscow offered to open talks on fishing rights earlier this year after a row between the Pacific State and the United States over the impounding of an
American tuna boat. “At the moment we have decided not to negotiate with the U.S.S.R. for any fishing agreements or arrangements,” Mr Alebua told Reuters. The tiny South Pacific State of Tuvalu was reported to have rejected similar soviet approaches for fishing rights in its econd&ic zone.
