Bonus for hockey squad
Jane Earnshaw, arguably the best left wing in New Zealand women’s hockey, has been included in the Canterbury team for the remaining representative matches this season. Earnshaw, because of commitments to the New Zealand softball squad, was not available for the P. 0.5.8. Trophy tournament which Canterbury won in Wellington in early May, but her expertise will be available to the team when it defends the Prudential Trophy at the national women’s tournament in Napier in September. Two members of the team who played in the P. 0.5.8. tournament have been excluded. Sue Duggan has made way for Earnshaw, and Lorraine Rouse has been excluded from the list of defenders. Rouse played soundly as a left flank defender in the Wellington tournament and is unlucky to be dropped from the team. The team is: Earnshaw, Judy Phillips, Leanne McFadden, Mary Clinton (Burnside); Cathy Thompson, Sue Edmundson, Shirley Haig, Robyn Hocking, Kathy Paterson (Carlton); Maree Flannery, Elaine Jensen (Harewood); Isabell Thomson, Shane Collins (Woolston); Nicky Sherriff (Selwyn). Coach: Pat Barwick. Clinton and Hocking are co-captains. A Canterbury B squad to play Malvern and Ashburton on July 7 has been named. The squad is: ‘ Lisa Sutherland, Lorraine Rouse (Harewood); Barbara Mitchell, (captain), Trish Harte, Pip Wilson (Selwyn); Sue Duggan, Sally Moorfield (vice-captain), Janet Sperry (Woolston); Delwyn Richards, Keryn Dawe, Geneva Kara (Pegasus); Lynda O’Cain, Keiran Doig, Sarah Weston (Burnside). Coach: Dave Suthridge.
