They should have had an education to university standard, and experience in teaching, preferably including teaching Maori. The art editor, in consultation with various editors and the chief art editor, plans and executes the design and oversees the production of selected educational publications. The art editor is expected to plan the graphic treatment and printing specifications of a publication, to select and commission the illustrations and to prepare copy and layout for the printer. Applicants should have tertiary qualification in fine arts and/or graphic design and experience in graphic design and illustration. Teaching experience is also desirable. The assistant editor will be responsible to the Chief Editor for the maintenance of standards in style and composition in all publications produced by the branch. In the course of this work, the assistant editor will be expected to read all copy at its various stages of preparation, to maintain the branch’s reference library and archival collection, and to carry out duties associated with the administration of copyright, research and other day-to-day editorial business of a large publishing house. Applicants should be able to read all kinds of text critically for accuracy and consistency in style. They should have had an education to university standard, and be familiar with the work of schools. Familiarity with library and research procedures would be an advantage.
