Pacific leader killed
NZPA-AP Koror, Belau President Haruo Remeliik, of the western Pacific island republic of Belau was shot and killed yesterday, and a Belauan was arrested in connection with the slaying, officials said. President Remeliik, in his second term and the only elected president the United States trusteeship has known, was shot four times as he walked from his car
to his home in the capital city of Koror, said a presi-
dential assistant, Bonifacio Basilius. Vice-President Alfonso Oiterong, who will succeed President Remeliik, was enroute to Belau from New York, said Mr Basilius. Mr Basilius said a special election would be called within 60 days. An official said a Belauan was arrested, but could not provide an identity or further details.
President Remeliik, who was shot with a handgun,
was dead on arrival at McDonald Memorial Hospital, said Mr Basilius.
An autopsy showed four bullets struck President Remeliik in the temple, cheek, neck and torso, and all exited his body, said Mr Basilius.
“The situation is calm and normal, although Belauans are in a state of shock,” he said, adding that there had been no threats against the President.
