Big tanker to call

With an over-all length of 212 metres, the Danish tanker Jakob Maersk will take up most of Lyttelton’s oil wharf when she berths today or tomorrow. The Jakob Maersk made Wellington her first New Zealand port of call yesterday. With a capacity of 59,650 tonnes of fuel, she will be the biggest tanker to visit Lyttelton. She will spend about 12 hours at the oil wharf, discharging 4.5 million litres of jet fuel and 7.1 million litres of gas oil, a fuel similar to diesel. The Jakob Maersk has been chartered by the Shell company to bring fuel from overseas during the six-month shutdown of the Marsden Point refinery from later this month. Built in 1976 for the A. P. Moller Company, of Denmark, she has cruising speed 17knots. Small-boat forecast The inshore marine forecast from Lyttelton Harbour to the Waimakariri rivermouth, as received from the Weather Office last evening: North-east winds, 10 knots, slight seas, with a one metre north-east swell; fair, with a few fine patches; southerly change, 15 knots, late this afternoon.
