Phasing-out of export assistance ‘wrong’
PA Wellington The Government would come to realise that the phasing-out of the marketing assistance to exporters from 1987 was wrong, the chairman of Manufacturing Exporters, Mr Barry Brill, has said. The marketing assistance scheme had played an important part last year in the 38 per cent boost to manufactured exports and in job
creation, Mr Brill said. He said 1987 might be a long way off, but exporters developed marketing plans three to five years ahead, and “their present decisions are starting to reflect the new export environment the phasing-out will create.” In line with the Government’s free market approach, exporters were already struggling to absorb the $4OO million loss in export incentives, he said.
