Chinchilla imports into N.Z. opposed
PA Wellington Further imports of chinchillas into New Zealand should not be permitted, said Action for Environment yesterday. It said that the 79 chinchillas now in New Zealand should be taken out of the country or destroyed. The organisation presented the views in a written submission to the Ministry of Agriculture on the environmental impact assessment of farming chinchillas in New Zealand. The organisation, said the risk of escape or deliberate release of the animals meant further imports should not be allowed. “We consider that the lack of knowledge of the animals’ ability to acclimatise to New Zealand conditions and potential impact on our native flora render further imports of chinchillas out of the question.”
