Small fields at Ashburton trials
Only small fields took part in the Ashburton trotting workouts this week on a track that was not as quick as usual after recent rain. The performances of the day came from the horses which led all the way. John Hay drove the unqualified pacer, Himy Harna, into the lead early then ran away from the field in the straight, and Jim Ferguson adopted similar tactics with Reiver in the CI and faster pace, though he did not win as easily. Results (all 2400 metres): Unqualified and faster trotters (six starters): Auto Craft, 30m, D. Townley, 1; Lord
Seaton, 60m, K. Townley, 2; Karl Sruhe, It, R. Prendergast, 3. Time: 3min 26.85. Unqualified pace (eight starters): Himy Harna, J. Hay, 1; Winslow Tom, D. Townley, 2; McWay, K. Townlev, 2. Time: 3:16.8. CO pace (four starters): Star Status, M. McDonald, 1, Dreamy Bogart, 2; Unique Evander, P. F. Boag, 3. Time: 3:18.1. CI and faster pace (seven starters): Reiver, J. Ferguson; Magnitude, R. Cameron, 2; Arbre, C. Middleton, 3. Time: 3:14. The work-outs next Thursday will feature a parade for yearlings.
