Sex information phones busy
NZPA-Reuter Madrid Spain’s sex information telephone service was flooded with more than 12,000 calls in its first year, said its service director. Dr Juan Antonia Nunez. “This is the first time Spaniards have been able to seek this type of help with sexual problems. They have been calling day and night with queries on topics such as premature ejaculation, pregnancy, and masturbation.” The service, known as Sex Inform, was started in July, 1984, with a subsidy from the Labour Ministry. It is staffed 10 hours a day by a team of sexologists, sociologists, and psychologists. Dr Nunez said that it had received inquiries from
callers in France, West Germany, and Sweden. “This is really the first service of its kind in Europe. All we ask is the caller’s age and home town.” Male callers outnumbered females more than two to one. The most numerous age group was between 21 and 30. “The youngest caller was a nine-year-old boy,” he said. Dr Nunez said the most frequent problems concerned pregnancy and contraceptives. Callers with clinical problems were referred to physicians.
