Police worried after A.I.D.S. victim search
PA Auckland The Auckland police were upset on Friday after bodysearching a transvestite they later found to have A.I.D.S. The transvestite, aged 25, was arrested at 1.40 p.m. on Thursday on minor theft and receiving charges and taken to the Auckland Central police station. The police finger-printed and searched him' before learning he was being treated at hospital for A.I.D.S.
The watch-house keeper, Senior-Sergeant Mick Anderson, has said that his staff were extremely upset, in spite of medical advice that there was no danger of catching the fatal disease through touching the victim. A cleaner, wearing special A.I.D.S. protection gear, washed and disinfected the cell in which the transvestite was held overnight.
Senior-Sergeant Anderson said no police wanted to touch the prisoner’s property, but they had no choice. All wore the A.I.D.S. protection kits while doing this task.
Other prisoners on their way to the District Court were warned on Friday that an A.I.D.S. sufferer was in their van. None seemed to care, he said. Court staff were also cautious on Thursday and yesterday when the transvestite appeared on the charges, keeping him in a cell separate from other prisoners. The transvestite asked a judge for bail on Friday because he needed urgent hospital treatment. The police checked this with the hospital authorities, who confirmed it. Bail was granted.
