Election threat
NZPA-Reuter Harare The Zimbabwean Government has threatened to cancel polling in any constituency during the General Election that will begin on June 27 if it believes there is intimidation or violence. Regulations published in a Government Gazette emSiwer the President, the ev. Canaan Banana, acting on the advice of the Electorial Supervisory Commission, to cancel elections in any area if he felt they would not be free and fair as a result of intimidation or violence. Such a cancelled poll may be held later as soon as the Government believed conditions in the affected area had improved, the regulations said. In the first political violence since campaigning for the elections began a week ago, an Opposition Patriotic Front-Zimbabwe African People’s Union candidate was hurt and his house gutted by fire by rival political party supporters near Hurare on Monday.
