Solid fuel burners
Sir, — Your letter from P. V. Neary (June 20), virtually condemning smoke and combustibles, leaves a feeling of disquiet. Is this the New Zealand of my birth which he is talking about? I have news for your correspondent. Smoke and combustibles are as old as time and as new as forward space travel. As an asthmatic, I, and many, many others, find direct benefit from clear wood smoke (i.e. bonfires) and deplore the barbecues “allowable” in city and urban areas, with their attendant lingering acrid char, but quietly tolerate it. In his diverse capacities relating to clean air and the running of Christchurch Transport Board diesel-fueled buses, with their resulting air pollution, is not your correspondent facing a severe conflict of interests? — Yours, etc., H. S. HOLMES. June 21, 1985.
