Gathering of rock samples admitted
PA Auckland A geologist for a mining company accused of illegal prospecting in a scenic reserve at Waihi Beach has admitted supervising the removal of hundreds of soil and rock samples from the area. Angry residents and landowners have called on the Minister of Energy, Mr Tizard, to prosecute Mineral Resources, Ltd, for allegedly prospecting in the Orokawa Scenic Reserve without authority. The Minister has replied that a successful prosecution would be doubtful in the absence of concrete evidence that “active prospecting” took place and that such prospecting had had an
effect on the environment. However, the Waihi district geologist for Mineral Resources, Mr Simon Henderson, confirmed that the company had done “geological reconnaissance” in the reserve in anticipation of gaining a prospecting licence under transfer from another company. This, he said, had involved removing about 50 rock chip samples, each of about a kilogram, and 300 to 400 soil samples of about 500 grams.
Mr Henderson said the work was “very low-key” and probably little different in terms of environmental impact from members of the public gathering sea shells off the beach.
