Top squash seeds not extended

Both the men’s and women’s No. 1 seeds, Paul Viggers and Rae Anderson of Australia, had reasonably comfortable wins in the first round of the $5OOO Skellerup Sport Star Canterbury Open squash tournament at the Christchurch club last evening. Anderson, the resident professional at the Henderson club in Auckland, dropped only seven points in her opening match against the local player, Rowan Toia. Viggers took only 33min to beat the tall Timaru player, Kelvin Kennedy, but dropped a game in the process. Kennedy managed quite a few dead nicks with overhead backhands. The Aucklander, Rod Hayes, seeded No 3, returning to the courts on which he has won five Canterbury, titles, had a straight games win over the Lancaster Park player, Robbie Burnett, in 30min.

Burnett fought hard and the first game took 14min, but from then on Hayes’ length and ability to hit the nick left him very much in control. In the quarter-finals this afternoon Hayes will meet the Young Sumner player, Steven Wren, who came from behind to shade Elliott Jones (Christchurch). Jones, who won the first games, held a match

ball at 8-5 in the fourth and called “short” when the scores reached 8-8. First round results were:— Men P. Viggers (Sumner) beat K. Kennedy (Timaru Celtic), 9-1, 9-5, 8-10, 9-4; R.
