Polish for insignia
The Christchurch Fire Brigade historian, Station Officer Tony Phillips, polishes the new insignia designed by a local fireman for the 125th anniversary celebrations of the service. Supervising is the chief fire commander, Mr Michael Burke. The brigade is the oldest in New Zealand and as there were no celebrations for its centenary, the brigade felt the 125th anniversary should not pass unnoticed. The logo, created by senior fireman Murray Jamieson, was launched
yesterday as the first of many activities leading up to the reunion week-end of November 15 to 17. On October 8 and 9, a sponsored team of fire brigade members will run from Greymouth to Christchurch, the proceeds from which will be jointly shared by the Asthma Research Foundation and the anniversary organising committee. An official ceremony,
complete with a water display and a street parade, will open the celebrations in Hagley Park on November 16. That afternoon, an open house featuring working and static displays of fire apparatus will be held at the Kilmore Street headquarters, and a church service will be conducted the next day at the Hall of Flames, Ferrymead Historic park, the biggest “fire station” in the southern hemisphere. Mr Phillips is writing a special limited-edition book covering the history of the Christchurch Fire Brigade from 1860 to 1985.
