Horse trials in Nelson

Top equestrian competitors from around the country, including the Olympic competitor, Mary Hamilton, who will be riding three horses, will gather in Nelson on Sunday for the start of the Swanndri New Zealand championship horse trials. The trials are the national one-day championships for novice, intermediate and advanced horse society eventers, and are the penultimate event of the autumn season. It has been several years since they were last held in the South Island. The culmination of the national season will be the three-day event being held

in Taupo in a fortnight’s time. The advanced trial for the Forest Gate Trophy has attracted a good field despite the absence of the New Zealand three-day event team, which flies to Australia on June 4 to compete at Gawler in South Australia on June 8-10. This means that last year’s winner, team member, Karen Tweedie, and Sandalwood, from Feilding, are unable to defend their title. Nevertheless, there are four North Island entries, any one of which could keep the trophy in the north. These include Olympian

Mary Hamilton, from Hawke’s Bay, riding Mr Ashley Christmas’ Bush Singlet, on which she was placed second at the Hawke’s Bay two-day event in mid-May. New Zealand team reserves, Judith Charleston and High Rate, and Marges Knighton on Muir of Ord, will provide tough competition. Charleston was the Intermediate champion last year, and she has just won the A.l cup at the N.Z. Pony Club championships in Christchurch. The strong South Island presence is headed by Tarnia Srhoy and Grey Heir, of Ashburton. The only South

Island combination on the short list for this year’s team to South Australia, Srhoy won the Nelson twoday event earlier in the season on Grey Heir. Also entered is a member of last year’s winning young rider team in Melbourne, Jane Cullen, from Christchurch, riding Awatuna. Forty-five entries have been received for the event. The venue is undulating farmland with a small stand of totara trees, the property of Mr and Mrs S. W. Blick, 88 Valley, Wakefield. The cross country course planner is Mr Selwyn Buckett. _____
