Hide the Loot entered for Caulfield Cup

By

J. J. BOYLE

The ?4000 Telegraph Handicap at Wingatui tomorrow could be the first step for Hide the Loot along the road towards a start in the $NZ765,000 Foster’s Caulfield Cup on October 19. The Riccarton trainer, Peter Jones, plans to campaign both Hide the Loot and Rattle the Sabre in Sydney and Melbourne next spring.

He has entered Rattle the Sabre for the $1 million Foster’s Melbourne Cup, and one of the lead-up races for his promising stayer will probably be The Metropolitan in Sydney.

Hide the Loot and Rattle the Sabre were paired for an 800 m sprint on a firm

No. 1 grass at Riccarton yesterday, and did their work efficiently to record 49.6. Hide the Loot has not raced since the Otago Racing Club’s December meeting, where he was second in both the Dunedin Guineas and the James Hazlett Stakes, but he might be equal to the task of winning fresh up over 1200 m in the T.A.B. trifecta race at Wingatui tomorrow. Donizetti and Shady News, runners for John Bourne’s stable at Wingatui tomorrow, performed satisfactorily in their winding-up gallops. Donizetti and Xerox re-

corded 1:43.4 for their 1600 and 48.6 for the last 800.

Donizetti has thrived in his preparation for the Stayers’ Plate, second leg of the Otago T.A.B. double. Shady News hurried in from the 800 in 46, evidence of her fitness for the Noble Bijou Handicap. Black Arrow’s final trial for the Noble Bijou Handicap was over 1400 m, with Maxispot joining in near the 800. Black Arrow came up with 1:28 for the distance, and 36.6 for the final 600. Maxispot led him by two lengths into the last 800, and was a length and a half clear at the end. On that run Maxispot rates something of a chance in the second leg of the Otago T.A.B. treble.

Upper Cut and Young

Nick, two runners for the Prendergast stable in the Noble Bijou Handicap, performed satisfactorily in separate trials. Upper Cut was clear of the jumper Karrayarkin after 800 in 49.4. Young Nick completed a solo trial over the same distance in 50. In the Glen and Dios were two other Noble Bijou Handicap form runners to please in solo trials. In the Glen came up with 47.8 for her 800, Dios was restricted to 600, a task she completed keenly in 36. Gums a Calling started easily with Rosy Vision at the 1000 m, and quickened for the final 600 in 37.6. Johnny’s Pal was let off with an unhurried 52.8 for his 800.
