Prince of Wales faces hard task tomorrow

Special correspondent Wellington A strong Central Districts bid, helped by a smattering of northern visitors, will make Prince of Wales’s task hard as he attempts the Wanganui City Diamond Jubilee Handicap, the first leg of the Wanganui Jockey Club's T.A.B. double tomorrow.

At $15,000, the richest flat race tomorrow, it has drawn a good field and Prince of Wales, a winner on the course, will be having just his third run in this campaign.

His first brought a second over 1600 m at Awapuni on Anzac Day and his second was a disappointing last of six at Trentham.

However, at Foxton on Tuesday he won a 1400 m trial and looks to be coming along in fine fashion. Big spring races remain his major objective, but the seven-year-old could pick up a purse or two along the way.

All Belles, from Rotorua, and the Levin four-year-old, Zelazny, appeal as strong chances. All Belles won at Te Rapa two starts back and she failed at Rotorua last week when favourite.

Zelazny has been running his share of good races and, after a close third behind Magnitude in good company at Awapuni, he stepped up to win a class 2 race at Te Rapa last time. He is due another chance on that

Super Tai (first at Trentham and second at Te Rapa), along with the laststart Foxton winner, Page Boy, head the handicap. Super Tai won this race last year when favourite. He had 57kg for that win and this week has an extra Ikg.

Exocet, a recent winner at Waipukurau, Wren, looking for her best form, Bidston Hill and Call Me Stumpy are among the form Central Districts runners.

Tamalane and Really True are included in the visiting contingent. Both have won on the course, as have Little Vic and C’est la Guerre.

The second leg of the double will be the Radio

2ZW 4000. a 1360 m sprint. A couple of mares, both course winners, Vera's Pal and Call It Quits, could dispute this one. Vera’s Pal last week won the Rotorua Travel Lodge Stakes, a $lO,OOO weight-for-age event. She was last in the Noble Heights Stakes at Te Rapa, but before that won the Wrightson at Feilding at Easter. Call It Quits was sixth in the Travelodge Stakes at Rotorua and before that won at Foxton, over 1400 m. Colman is a last-start winner (at Masterton last week) while Aljustrel, Jendra, and the resuming Tidestemmer, a visitor from Matamata, look the best of the others.
