Rugby league spectator guilty of assault

PA Auckland A rugby league spectator who hit three players with a crutch during a game was convicted on three assault charges in the District Court at Henderson yesterday. Matthew Guttenbeil, aged 20, a labourer, of Ponsonby, pleaded guilty to two charges of common assault and a further charge of assault with intent to injure arising from the incident at

the league match in Te Atatu on March 30.

Judge Browne convicted Guttenbeil on all three charges and remanded him on bail until June 12 for a probation report and sentence.

When a scuffle between players occurred, Guttenbeil, a spectator, grabbed a crutch from another spectator and ran on to the field.

He knocked one player unconscious. The victim

later needed hospital attention and had 18 stitches put into his mouth.

Two other players received cuts and bruises. Guttenbeil then ran off but was found by the police two days later. Mr Kevin Ryan, representing Guttenbeil, said that his client had voluntarily gone to the police and had since made up with and paid compensation to the victims.
