$6M contract won by firm
PA Auckland An Auckland company, Geothermal Energy New Zealand. Ltd, has won a $6 million contract in Kenya. The company's managing director, Dr Michael Allen, said yesterday that it had beaten strong competition from companies in Italy, the United States, and Iceland. Geothermal Energy was involved with Kenya’s first geothermal power project, which now generates 45 megawatts.
Dr Allen said his company has $2O million worth of work in progress in Indonesia, Ethiopia, Djibouti. Japan. Greenland, and Yugoslavia. "New Zealand is considered a world leader in all phases of geothermal power generation but in recent
times too much of this has been utilised outside this country,” he said. Dr Allen said he hoped the overseas experience gained by the company’s engineers would soon be used in New Zealand. "The prospect of geothermal fields being developed for major project power requirements is very exciting.”
The Prime Minister, Mr Lange, has welcomed the contract news. He said he had been greatly impressed with what he saw at the Kenyan site during his recent visit to Africa.
Commenting on suggestions that his visit influenced the winning of the contract, Mr Lange said that all credit for that must go to the firm.
