Tax relief for drought donations

PA Wellington The Government has decided that money given to drought-affected farmers in North Otago and South Canterbury will qualify for tax relief. The move was a result of representations made by Federated Farmers, said the Minister of Finance, Mr Douglas, and the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Moyle, in a joint statement. individuals may claim a tax rebate of up to $2OO on their total donations for this financial year and public companies may receive relief on donations up to $4OOO. The minimum qualifying donation is $5. Trustee savings banks will be the official collecting agents. Lincoln College will give 1000 bales of hay for drought relief in North Otago and South Canterbury. The college farms had a hay surplus this year and the bales would be of some assistance to farmers, a member of the college council, Sir Allan Wright, told a council meeting yesterday.

There would still be ample hay for college needs, Sir Allan said.
