Turner no longer available for N.Z.
PA Wellington The mid-fielder, Grant Turner, has withdrawn from the New Zealand soccer team to play a Central Region selection in Wanganui tomorrow, and says he is no longer available to play for the All Whites. Turner told the acting coach, Mr Fred Goodwin, of his decision on Monday. Goodwin said he doubted anyone would be brought into the squad to replace Turner. Turner, 26, has said in the
past he was giving up international soccer but accepted an invitation from the New Zealand coach, Mr Kevin Fallon, to play against Newcastle United in Wellington last week. That match convinced Turner that his international career is over. “I played against Newcastle to see if I was still up to it,” Turner said. “I don’t think I am. Injuries have slowed me up and my pace was one of my major assets at that level. “Opponents are not only
catching up to me now, they are passing me. “I have given the matter a lot of thought and decided I don’t want international soccer any more. I can’t do justice to the team or myself at that level now. "I just had to get it clear in my mind and that is why I played against Newcastle.” Turner also said he was sick of people getting at him. He referred to an article in a Sunday newspaper which labelled him “public enemy No 1” in Fiji.
