Idea to solve shortage
PA Wellington A co-ordinated national recruitment campaign overseas was needed to combat New Zealand’s serious nursing shortage, said the Wellington Hospital Board’s chief nurse, Mrs Barbara Shadbolt, last evening. A joint approach, possibly through the Health Department, seemed far better than each of New Zealand’s 29 hospital boards doing its own overseas recruiting, she said.
Together they would probably have better success in attracting much needed staff, particularly as Australia was also mounting a vigorous overseas campaign. Mrs Shadbolt was commenting on the news that the Palmerston North Hospital Board’s chief nurse, Ms Sue Burrell, will go to London in June to interview about 100 nurses who had responded to advertisements in English nursing journals and newspapers.
