Road to close

Scarborough Road will be closed for four hours on Wednesday while the Christchurch City Council removes unstable overhanging rock between the Esplanade and Whitewash Head Road. All Scarborough and Taylors Mistake residents have been told of the closing through a circular. Traffic will be kept away from the work area between 8.30 a.m. and 12.30 p.m. on Wednesday. The council has told residents that some overhanging rock on the cliff face, near the Scarborough Park paddling pool, may be un stable.

The suspect rock outcrops will be removed to lessen the danger of a future rock fall. Four hours will be needed to prepare the site, remove the rock, and clear the road for traffic again. A bed of sand will be laid below the cliff to cushion

the fall of rocks. The sand will be taken from beaches at Sumner and returned later.

Short closings and delays might continue through Wednesday afternoon as site clearing is continued. Up to six trees will be removed near the top edge of the bank. Their root systems are contributing to instability problems. Tree removal work will be done before Wednesday. Pedestrian access along the closed road section will also be banned during the work. Foot access to hillside homes will be along Edwin Mouldey Track.
