Eden Park protest
PA Auckland Police with arms locked pushed back about 200 protesters on Saturday outside Eden Park, venue of the Auckland-England rugby match.
An orange smoke bomb was let off in the scuffle, during which one person was arrested. The marchers heeded a call by one of their leaders to retreat.
Detective Chief Inspector lan Mills said yesterday that the protesters were to blame for the confrontation. He said that the marchers were the authors of their own misfortune by failing to get in touch with the police before the match.
However, the leader of Hart, Mr John Minto, said that the protesters never got in touch with the police.
The No Tour ’B5 Coalition said last evening that it had sent a telegram to the Minister of Police, Mrs Hercus, objecting to the way the police handled the protest. In addition to the arrest outside the ground, three persons inside were apprehended.
