Soccer Penalty pots Burndale out of Cup

Burndale United’s hopes of continuing its giant-killing run in the Le Coq Sportif Chatham Cup soccer competition ended in gathering darkness at English Park on Saturday. But it was not goals, but penalties, which beat Burndale United, which was eliminated by New Brighton after 120 minutes of scoreless soccer and a penalty shoot-out, which Brighton won, 3-2. Burndale gave a brave acount of itself against an opponent which produced some reasonable soccer at times, but suffered through lack of a sharp edge in its finishing. Jeff Hawker and Peter Ross came close for Burndale in normal time and had Wavne Harrison got an outstretched foot to the ball right in front of an open goal seconds before the final whistle, extra time would not have been required. Gerard Kemp came closest to pitting Brighton ahead.

banging the ball against a post in the second half from close range. Andy Daffin kicked the ball off the Brighton line from a flick by Harrison 11 minutes into extra time which otherwise was memorable only for the increasing signs of fatigue as players drove themselves through to the finish. Neither side really looked like scoring and penalty kicks seemed inevitable from early on in the extra period. Even in the shoot-out. Burndale could, and should, have won. Hawker scored first and Terry Neville's opening effort for Brighton was straight at Burndale’s goal-keeper, Tony Boomer. Mike Boyd then had his shot saved by the Brighton goalkeeper, Steve Payne, diving to his left; but Kemp made no mistake to level the scores, 11. c).

Martin Quinn scored for Burndale but Daffin had his shot blocked by Boomer’s leg. That meant Burndale led, 2-1, and had the captain, Bob Bradley, and Peter Ross scored, Brighton was out. However, those two committed the cardinal sin of penalty taking, pushing their shots wide of Payne’s right and left uprights respectively. Dave Erickson did score for Brighton in between, leaving Dion Moir to win the match, which he did, pushing the ball low to Boomer's left into the corner of the net. Hurricane Rangers advanced to the third round of the Chatham Cup with a 4-1 win over Cockram Nissan Shamrock at Rangers Park. However, the margin was a shade misleading. Two of Rangers’ goals came in the last five minutes at the end of a second half in which Shamrock had done most of the

attacking, but was handicapped by weak finishing. Rangers led, 2-0, at halftime, through an Alan South header early in the match and Gordon Faichnie. The little midfielder seemed to get the benefit of a hairline offside decision when the ball broke for him. His shot was partly blocked by the Shamrock goalkeeper, Neville Petrie, but had enough momentum to run into an open net. Shamrock did some good work in the midfield after halftime, but was unable to reduce the margin until 15 minutes from the end. The sweeper, Paul Sherratt, struck his volley sweetly from 25 metres and i't flew into the corner of the net. Pressing forward for the equaliser, Shamrock was caught out at the back as Jeff Blackburn broke down the right, pulled the ball across for Faichnie. unmarked at the far post, to control the ball, pick

his spot and beat Petrie. Blackburn had a hand in the fourth goal just before the final whistle. His clever flick released lan Cowan. Petrie got a hand to the left foot shot but could not stop the ball rolling over the line. Nomads United joined Rangers and Brighton in the third round with a 1-0 win over Woolston W.M.C. The only goal in a close encounter of the Cup-tie footballing kind was scored by Danny Halligan midway through the second half. KLM Cashmere’s patchy recent run continued on Saturday as it got the equalising goal in its Hertz League match with Christchurch United’s reserves just 20 sec. from the end. Drew Hendrie’s header from a corner enabled Cashmere to come away with a point after Graeme Archer had put United ahead 15 minutes from the end. R**
