Council explains Fendalton Rd plan

Fendalton Road residents received yesterday an illustrated pamphlet explaining the Waimairi District Council’s proposal for widening their road.

The pamphlet was produced by the council to give residents a clear picture of the proposal before meeting council staff on Wednesday. Diagrams of the existing road and proposed changes are included as well as answers to some of the most common queries about the proposal. The diagram above shows: ® A cross-section of the existing road. It is about 20m wide from fence to fence apart from narrower sections near Stratford Street.

® The present proposal with wide median strip. The

concept proposes to retain most of the significant trees. Parking is provided intermittently and the footpath meanders behind the trees. A median allows right-turning vehicles to queue clear of the through traffic. ® The present proposal with narrow median strip. Between the railway and Straven Road a continuous narrower median could be provided to enable the more significant trees to be retained. Right-turning gaps would be eliminated. The diagram above left shows some of the possibilities of the proposal: O Parking between existing trees. ® Meandering footpaths. ® Special paving at intersections.

® Street lighting and low

planting in the median. A plan for widening Fendalton Road was drawn up in 1966 and used as the blueprint for the reconstruction of the stretch from the railway line to Harper Avenue 11 years ago. The road needed to be widened to a four-lane because the existing road was in poor condition and did not cater for the traffic that used it, either efficiently or safely, according to council district and traffic engineers. It was also a main arterial road and should be improved to the high standard of the rest of the route to the airport. Members of the Fendalton Residents’ Association will meet council staff and councillors on Wednesday to discuss the proposals.
