Attack in jail

PA Auckland A Paremoremo prisoner was in hospital yesterday after being stabbed during a breakfast-time altercation.

The prison superintendent, Mr John Smith, said that Adrian Hingaia, aged 23, was stabbed twice with a weapon believed to be a “hobby” wood-carving knife on Thursday.

The incident ended months of peace at Auckland’s maximum security jail, he said.

Mr Smith said Hingaia was in North Shore Hospital with wounds described as “not very severe.” The attack seemed to have resulted from a personal dispute between the victim and another prisoner. One man had been questioned by the police. Mr Smith said the alleged weapon was being examined by the D.S.I.R. The attack apparently happened while prisoners were’’having breakfast.
