Wolfenden impressed with Trident

Special correspondent Auckland

Peter Wolfenden was impressed when he drove the South Island two-year-old, Trident, in training at Alexandra Park yesterday.

He will drive the colt in the Cigna Insurance Sires’ Stakes Final Wolfenden took him 2400 m on the rain-sodden inside track.

“He is certainly a nice little horse,” he said. “He went right-handed without any trouble, is very tractable, and does everything right.” Trident was brought in to Alexandra Park from Kumeu, where he has been stabled since he was flown to Auckland last week.

His trainer, Brian O’Meara, said the colt had “really thrived.” Not surprisingly, O’Meara is still unhappy over the mistake by the New Zealand Sires’ Stakes Board which necessitated a redraw of the barrier positions— Trident went from No. 1 to 10.

“But nothing can be done about it. I only hope he gets a good run,” he said. Society Lord, Farm Boss, Rely and Ollie’s Chance, the other southern contenders, arrived in Auckland by air on Wednesday and are being stabled at Alexandra Park. All travelled well and looked in fine trim

Alba’s Reign pleased his trainer, Graeme Harris,

when he did a workout over 2400 m at Claudelands

Accompanied by a stablemate, Pixanover, Alba’s Reign went “about 3:40,” well out from the rails.

“He went very well,” Harris said, “and pulled up well. I was very pleased with him.”

The colt had shaped equally well in a work-out over the same distance at Harris’s track at Morrins.ville on Tuesday.

“I still can’t understand why he went so badly last Saturday,” said Harris.

“This week, he has been eating everything and, all round, seems as good as gold.”
