Whangarei club may lose

PA Whangarei The Whangarei Racing Club is hoping its rescheduled meeting, at Ruakaka on Monday will not be ruined by a mass withdrawal of horses. The meeting was to have been held yesterday but the club was given permission by the Racing Authority to race on Monday after State highway 1 between Auckland and Whangarei was closed by bad weather. Most Auckland and Waikato trainers have indicated that they will support the meeting, a club spokesman said yesterday. However, a number of scratchings are expected from trainers choosing to race closer to home at the Franklin meeting at Puekekohe on Wednesday. “We’ll take a bit of a hiding financially, there’s no doubt about that,” said the spokesman. “But we want to keep faith with people in the north and for that reason we decided it was better to take the risk of having depleted fields and race on Monday rather than not race at all.”
