First shark probably a record
NZPA-AAP Adelaide
A teen-age boy from Streaky Bay, on South Australian Eyre Peninsula, has caught his first shark — and claims it as a world-record catch.
Dion Gilmore, aged 16, says the 4.25 m white pointer he reeled in near Streaky Bay, about 800 km east of Adelaide, is a world-first for a 50-pound line.
Dion’s white pointer weighed in about 940 kg, beating the previous record catch on a 50-pound line by about 90kg. After setting out with relatives and friends in his father’s crayfish boat, Dion landed the big shark, but only after a IVz hour battle. However, Dion reckons he was helped by the shark.
“I think it wanted to be caught — it took us three goes and it just kept coming back.” he said. “It wanted to commit suicide.”
Dion will send the details of his catch and his line to Sydney before it can be ratified and entered in the record books.
