AUSTRALIA Bargain hunters halt slide

PA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed steadier after bargain hunters moved on to the market and slowed the recent slide, brokers said. They said the market eased in morning trading, rallied slightly by the mid-session break and steadied in the afternoon.

The all ordinaries index fell 0.9 points to end the day on 887.3. This compared with a 9.6 point slide yesterday. The all industrials index dropped 2.1 points to 1247.8, the all resources index was steady at 605.6, and the gold index shed 16 points to 953.3. Brokers said the market’s 17 point slide, since Monday’s record of 904.8, was a technical correction and has brought the market back to a sensible level.
