Cauliflower glut good news for the family provider
A glut of cauliflowers was evident at Christchurch produce markets this week, meaning good news for the consumer.
Prices dropped to $2.50 to $5 a bag, averaging about 50c each, while retail prices surveyed yesterday ranged between 60c to 70c each. In recent weeks, cauliflowers have sold for as high as $1.99 each. The vegetable should pro-
a bushel; Brussels sprouts at $6 to $lO a bag and about $1 a kilogram; and excellent quality carrots to $5.50 a 20kg bag. Cases of Chinese cabbages fetched good prices at about $5 for six, as did hothouse telegraph cucumbers
at $1.20 to $2 each. Kumara was $l4 to $l6 a bushel and yams were to $l4 a 4kg case. A good range of potatoes were available, including Ham Hardy, Chippewa, and Black Soil. The demand for lettuces
dropped this week because of the colder weather, and this was reflected in prices. The lettuces, from local growers and Oamaru, fetched $2 to $5 a case and 45c each.
A good range of citrus fruit was available, including oranges, lemons, grapefruit, and mandarins. Two mandarin varieties, the sweet clementine and the easy-peel satsuma, were offered.
Kiwifruit was cheap at 50c to $1 a kilogram, but tamarillos were fairly expensive at $l9 to $25 a bushel.
