Waikato rider leads dressage
A Waikato rider, Bernese Muir, has taken a preliminary lead in the A.l section after the first day of dressage in the New Zealand Pony Club championships being held at Riccarton Racecourse.
Riding her tall chestnut gelding, Happy Wanderer, in a polished performance, Muir finished well ahead of the second placegetter, Maree Brunton on High Time.
A local rider, Toni Morrisey, riding her well-known black gelding, Carlos, for Canterbury-Westland lies third in the A.l section, at present. Waitemata-Rodney rider, Paula Bygrave, on her grey pony Legend Royalty took a comfortable preliminary lead in the D.C. section for riders 16 years and under. Robyn Mudge riding
Waimeha Taphro, from the Manawatu-West Coast team lies second, and Bridget Cashmore on her black horse, Casino, also from the Waikato team, is third.
Yesterday was the first day of dressage in the championships. The second half of competitors will complete their dressage tests today, and the crosscountry and showjumping phases will get under way tomorrow.
Despite it being a chilly morning, there was a good turnout of several hundred spectators. Results:—
