Society warns of fake collectors
People making contributions to the Crippled Children Society Appeal to be held tomorrow are asked to make sure that the collectors are wearing official identification tags and carrying official bags before giving their donation. During past collections there have been two or three telephone calls from con-
cerned contributors who believed that bogus collectors were calling on householders for their donations. The manager of the Canterbury and West Coast branch of the Crippled Children Society, Mr Bob Mitchell, says that the collectors will be easily identified by their tags and bags, but if anyone is in doubt about the authenticity of a collector, they should put their donation in an envelope and post it to the society in Kilmarnock Street. Last year the public con-
tributed $107,000 in the Christchurch and surrounding district for the annual appeal. Mr Mitchell says the society is aiming to raise about $125,000 this year. About 3500 volunteers taken from a cross-section of the community will be taking part in the appeal, which starts at 9 a.m. tomorrow. Anyone willing to spare a couple of hours collecting would be most welcome, and is asked to ring the society at 488-974 for information, says Mr Mitchell.
