Climbers ‘ambassadors’
PA Wellington The expedition that will leave in July to climb the west ridge of Mount Everest will be made “a sporting ambassador for New Zealand,” the Minister of Overseas Trade and Marketing, Mr Moore, has announced.
The expedition would be among the group of sports and cultural ambassadors to be announced after the Budget, he told a fund-raising function for the expedition in Auckland. The 14-member, all-New
Zealand team is the first New Zealand Alpine Club expedition to Mount Everest and is attempting an unclimbed route from Tibet. Mr Moore said the sports and cultural ambassador programme was a way of using the high international profile of New Zealand’s sports people to promote overseas trade and tourism. “The international recognition and news media coverage these people get are unequalled by most other marketing campaigns,” he said.
