Surgical century for 11-y ear-old
PA Hamilton Tracey Matthews, aged 11, of Hamilton, is a rare child on two counts. She has a rare medical condition (multiple papallomata of the larynx and trachea) which causes growths on the vocal cords, and today in Waikato Hospital she had the rare distinction of her hundredth operation when surgeons trimmed them off.
Tracey’s visits to the sur-
gcal theatre depend on how st the polyps grow. Some visits have been as close as a fortnight apart. She is usually in hospital 48 hours. Recently she has been rather better and the surgery has been four to eight weeks apart. Her parents, Graham and Maureen Matthews, hope the medical condition will follow the usual pattern — Tracey should grow out of it as she gets older.
