N.Z. Party denies links with man jailed for fraud

PA Wellington The director-general of the New Zealand Party, Mr Charles Begg, yesterday denied that a man jailed for fraud in the District Court at Hamilton on Tuesday was a former secre-tary-treasurer of the party’s Wellington branch.

Leslie Ronald Orchard, aged 25, a self-employed salesman, of Wellington, was jailed for 52 weeks

after being found guilty on fraud charges. He was described in court as a former secretarytreasurer of the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Party. “Inquiry shows that the person concerned was briefly a member in the Porirua electorate,” Mr Begg said. “He was never employed by the party. He held no such post as secretary-

treasurer, which is and has been held by the same person, a chartered accountant, for 18 months. “There has never been a Wellington branch of the New Zealand Party.

“The man, according to the news report, has numerous convictions for fraud and the law as it stands is defective in allowing criminals to make these sort of claims with immunity from prosecution.”
