Fittingly a win for WD

By

J. J. BOYLE

Chief Powhatan’s win in The Cardinal King, one of the minor races at the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting, yesterday, did something to raise the enthusiasm of a crowed on a chilly, bleak, showery day. The successful jockey was Bill Skelton, who was having his last day of race riding at Riccarton, and was a special guest of the club. The 53-year-old former South Islander kicked Chief

Powhatan away to win the 1200 m race by two lengths. This was Skelton’s 2178th win in a notable career, which began in 1947 and will end in July. A presentation was made to Skelton on behalf of the club by. the chairman, Dr Jeff Louisson, after the Levin horseman’s final ride on the course, in the Noir Filou Handicap, yesterday. His mount, Bernardone, was the win favourite and finished sixth in the second leg of the T.A.B. double.
