Departure bid fails
NZPA-Reuter Lagos Thousands of illegal immigrants ordered to be shipped out of Nigeria by the military Government faced further transit delays yesterday after an abortive mass bid to leave by land.
A huge convoy of vehicles was prevented from crossing into neighbouring Benin by the police, witnesses said. Immigrants alleged
that four of their number had been shot dead. Nurses said they had seen, but not examined, three bodies. A month ago, Nigerian authorities told an estimated 700,000 illegal immigrants — half of them Ghanaian — to legalise
their status or leave by last Friday. Land borders were opened about a week ago to let them out but closed when the deadline expired.
