Unesco head criticised

NZPA-AFP Paris The Director-General of Unesco, Mr Amadou Mahtar M’Bow, in an unprecedented move, was yesterday strongly criticised for his extensive trips abroad and was urged to carry out budgetary restraint and a “less politicised” programme. The attack —the first direct criticism of Mr M’Bow made at a public session of a Unesco executive council meeting — came from the British delegate, William Dodd. London earlier threatened to withdraw from Unesco after criticising its administra-

tion. In a session to draw up a two-year budget and programme plans for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, Mr Dodd said he was “very conscious of the large amount of foreign travel” Mr M’Bow had done. Mr M’Bow made about 20 foreign trips between October last year and March, 1985, according to a report released last week. “I wonder whether he will find it possible to spend rather more time here in Paris in the future in order to co-ordinate and lead the secretariat,” Mr Dodd said.
